The Margery Medium (1924) is Harry Houdini’s concise but forceful exposé of Boston spiritualist Margery Crandon, whose séances—featuring spirit voices, moving objects, and physical manifestations—had convinced many prominent investigators of their authenticity. After personally attending and testing her séances while she was being evaluated by psychical research groups, Houdini concluded that the phenomena were produced through ordinary physical means, including concealed use of hands, feet, and simple mechanical tricks, aided by darkness and lax controls. The book documents Houdini’s recreations of Margery’s effects to show that no supernatural forces were involved and criticizes investigators who, in his view, abandoned skepticism in favor of belief. More broadly, the work reflects Houdini’s mission to protect the public from deception and to draw a clear line between theatrical illusion and fraudulent claims of communication with the dead.
